Nordic Forum 2014 at Malmö-Workshop: AU PAIRS: DAUGHTERS of GLOBALISATION BABAYLAN



BABAYLAN , the Philippine Women’s Network in Denmark is tackling this apparently controversial topic on Au Pairs in Norden -as can be gleamed from media debate- with a Workshop entitled: Living with the AU PAIR Scheme in Norden

Date & Time: Sunday, 15 June, from 11:00 – 12:30

The Workshop will present a Status in 3 countries, problematize and synthesize solutions and present best practices if any regarding the Au Pair Scheme as it functions in the Nordic welfare states today. Workshop results to be presented in Open Plenary. Formulation of Statement. We will document the event afterwards with a Proceedings report..

WELCOME to One and All: to MEDIA so they can write more nuanced on Au Pairs in the future, to Host Families& All other ACTORS so together we can all learn more and have a JUST and FAIR AU PAIR System in Norden.


  • Denmark: Karina Dalgas, PhD. Fellow, Department of Anthropology, Copenhagen University

karinadalgasKarina Dalgas is a PhD fellow at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen. In her dissertation on Filipino migration through the Danish au pair scheme, Karina examines the long-term trajectories of former, current and prospective au pairs.With a transnational approach to au pair migration, Karina has conducted fieldwork in the au pairs’ Philippine home societies and among their migrant networks in Denmark and abroad. Karina’s main research interest is migration, family relations and domestic work.

  • Norway: Elisabeth Stubberud, PhD Fellow , the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Elisabeth StubberudElisabeth Stubberud works at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. She is currently working on the PhD-project, An extra pair of hands. Ethnic minority women’s work as au pairs in Norway, which is part of the umbrella project Buying and selling gender equality, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Based on qualitative interviews with au pairs, participant observation, and film analysis, her thesis focuses on the cultural construction of au pairs in the public sphere, au pairs’ affective and emotional labour in the private home, and possibilities of (relational) citizenship through au pairing. Her main research interests include migration and domestic work, racialization and ethnicization of labour, cultural representations, feminist and postcolonial theory, and intimacy and affect.

  • Sweden: Erliza Pedersen, PhD Fellow, Department of Arts and Communication, Malmö University

ErlizapedersenErliza Lopez Pedersen is a Doctoral Candidate at the School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University. Her doctoral research is within the context of communication for development, specifically discussing the roles of transnational Filipino civil society and the newly established web-based community radio in engaging Filipinos in the Nordic and Spain to participate in social discussions leading to social development in the host country and the homeland. For her Master’s thesis, Erliza discussed the importance of behaviour change among au pairs in Denmark and to see themselves as citizens in order to be included in the Danish society

ana.lindenhannCurrent Chairpersson of Babaylan Denmark, Ana joined Babaylan Denmark in 2002 and served as Secretary for many years before her election to the top position.  Blogger and Radio host of “Buhay AuPair” (Au Pair’s Life) with Channel Philippines Network, CPN. Ana has the everyday link to au pairs and is  Creator and Admin of Filipina Aupair Network. She is  Board member of the Danish Minority Council of Denmark (EMKR) and was  consultant at Denmark’s WomenCOunil (Kvinderåd)  counselling service. Ana has been part of Babaylan’s team of counsellors on gender issues, esp. focusing on au pairs 24/7 since 2008.

Filomenita Mongaya Hoegsholm

Filomenita Mongaya Høgsholm, Founding Chair of Babaylan DK, co-founded Europe’s first migrant women network, the  Phil. Women’s Network, Babaylan Europe in 1992 in Barcelona. Journalist-editor-documentary filmmaker, FMH slid into activism during the first Nordic Forum in 1988 in Oslo, later  coordinating the  participation of Denmark’s immigrant women in Beijing during the UN Intl. Women’s Conference in 1995. She received the Grassroots Foundation Award for the magazine Soldue in 1994. She is Editor of Abakada magazine amd compiled/edited “In de olde worlde:views of Filipino migrants in Europe”, with support from UNESCO. A charter member of GFDC,  Global FIlipinos in Diaspora Council, a global body servicing the 10 million Filipinos abroad. In March 2013, she signed for Babaylan the MOA with CFO (Commission of Filipinos Overseas)  Secretary Imelda Nicolas. She was Rotary awardee (Surigao City) for Migrant Women Advocacy,2013. She hosts Usapang Pinay (Filipinas in Conversation) with CPN starting 2014. Judy Jover, Former Chairperson,Babaylan Denmark’s chair for 5 years

She is Babaylan-Denmark’s representative with PICUM (Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants), WAVE (Women’s Against Violence Europe), EU MIA (European Migrants Integration Academy) and member of Babaylan-Europe Executive Board. Judy Jover was the resource person with Au Pair Suppport (Danish Refugee Council) giving presentations and talks on Au Pair information events working together with APS lawyers. She is also very active in giving talks and presentations to different groups of au pairs all over Denmark. She is the contact person assisting the Philippine Embassy and the Danish Philippine Consulate in helping Filipinas when they are in need of help especially on women issues. She joined Babaylan Denmark in 2000 and was involved with production (layout)of Abakada magazine since its start.
